Diabetes mellitus

INTEGRA PROTECT Diabetes was specially developed for cats with diabetes mellitus. The high content of protein und the modest supply of carbohydrates ensure a moderate increase of blood glucose after feed intake.

Multifunctional: This diet contains at the same time no grain and is therefore suitable for cats with a cereal intolerance.

What causes diabetes mellitus?

The pancreas produces the hormone insulin. It ensures that the blood sugar level in healthy cats is kept constant within narrow levels. Insulin is the only hormone that can reduce the blood sugar content by promoting glucose transport from the blood into the cells. Diabetes mellitus occurs when not enough insulin is formed.

The causes for this may be diverse:

  • Infections
  • Destruction of the cells in the pancreas
  • Reduction of the cells (aging)
  • Target cells in liver/muscle react no or less to insulin
  • Overweight/obesity
  • Deposits of certain metabolites (amyloid) in pancreatic cells
  • Medication

Nutrition with diabetes mellitus?

Dietetic feed continues to be a fundamental element of treatment for diabetes mellitus, along with administration of insulin. The supply with a constant energy amount and the identical ingredients is of special interest. The target of any diet is keeping the blood sugar level as constant as possible after food intake.

Special dietary feed as INTEGRA PROTECT Diabetes therefore should contain a protein proportion of > 45 % of the metabolizable energy and the lowest possible carbohydrate share. The number of meals must be aligned with the administrations of insulin. Two insulin injections at an interval of 12 hours should correspond to at least 2 or better 4 meals.

If the cat is not only suffering from diabetes mellitus, but also from struvite or calcium oxalate stones, a suitable diet used to be hard to find. INTEGRA PROTECT Diabetes now offers the appropriate solution. With a specifically balanced content of minerals, as well as an appropriate supply of magnesium and phosphorus, it leads to an urine with the ideal pH-value between 6,5 - 6,8. These pH-values prevent the formation of struvite or calcium oxalate stones.
